Asset Protection Zones (APZs) are widely understood as separation distances between vegetation and development. In practice, however, their effectiveness depends just as much on vegetation structure within the APZ as on the distance itself.
One of the most important structural factors influencing bushfire behaviour is the presence or absence of ladder fuels.
